Department of Chemistry : Morigaon College

Introduction

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1985 along with the Science stream in the oldest building from where the college started its ambitious journey. Recently, with a fund received from the RUSA and K.K. Handique (Morigaon College Branch), the new building has been preserved and is being used to teach undergraduate and higher secondary students. The Department is housed with one research laboratory, three general laboratories, one preparation room, three class rooms, one seminar hall and one staff room.

History

At the early stage, the department offered only chemistry as a general subject with one faculty member, Mr. Debabrata Sarma. After few years, Mr. Sarma was accompanied by other faculty members viz. Akhil Kr. Gohain, Dr. Arunima Sarma and Pushpa Jyoti Mahanta. One post was transferred to Hindi after Mr. Gohain's demise in 2001, leaving the department with three sanctioned posts. Unfortunately, in June 03 2021, Mr. Mahanta was also passed away. On 20 August 2021, Dr. Swagata Baruah has joined the department against vacant position of Sri Debabrata Sarma (retired).

B.Sc. Honours Course in Chemistry was introduced in 2012 . A number of alumni of this department have made it to the institutions of higher education like Gauhati University, IASST, etc. Dr. Sarma of the department is actively involved in research activities. A number of major and minor projects have already been completed. 2 research scholars are pursuing their PhD under her guidance.
